My Friend

My Friend
Nobody knew us
Because you never knew me
Your smile,
A string of glistening stars,
Tended the fire your heart rejected
The warm touch of your gentle hand,
Meant only as the mark of a friend,
Turned to poison
When I wished for love's affection there
Blind to the light of you wisdom,
I carried the dream of sharing your heart,
Supressing the fear of your deep, knowing eyes,
The pain of their failure to see what I am
I must deny you,
Luminous spirit,
Or die
The sweet music of your voice,
Vivid depth of your mind,
I leave to haunt my dreams
I told you once
But at your disbelief, I lied,
Unsaying the thing
I wished so long to say
Farewell,
Beloved anomaly,
Angel most kind and cruel,
My friend
